Press Release
Singer-songwriter Stephen Hodd is set to release his transformative single ‘Soul Getter’ on April 25, 2025, ahead of his upcoming Irish tour. Originally written in 2013 in the basement of a house in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains north of Madrid, the song emerged just before the birth of his son, Oskar. Armed with his Les Paul guitar, Hodd crafted the track in a quiet escape, letting the riff evolve as he worded the lyrics, “Soul Getter, who are you trying to find? Cast your jetsam to the ocean blind.”
“‘Soul Getter’ is about awakening into a state of transformation,” Hodd explains. “We are never one thing—we’re always capable of great change. It’s about letting the light in and letting go of what holds you back.” For Hodd, those burdens included a perceived lack of success, addiction, and alcoholism. Having left Ireland years ago to pursue his career after false starts, he found himself joining Lou Rhodes of Lamb and Passenger as a guitarist in the UK. The birth of his son and a fresh start with his partner marked a turning point, inspiring the song’s initial recording for an EP.
The track was later re-recorded for Hodd’s forthcoming album, crafted in a cabin by a river where he shut himself away from the world. “It was the last song I recorded,” he recalls. “I knew it had to be on the album to bring this journey back toward the light.” With an electric guitar, a vocal mic, and an analogue delay unit, he let the notes cascade, sealing the album in a moment of raw inspiration. “I never let technology get in the way of a good take—that’s vital to why I make music.”
‘Soul Getter’ speaks to shedding stowaways—people and things that drag you down—and reconnecting with your own power. The lyrics weave a story of self-love and renewal: “Put away your guns, steer your vessel to a shady bay / Your love is like a firefly on the edge of life / Let it burst like a new sun over everything / Lift the curse of these memories and a new day will begin.” For Hodd, it reflects both his child’s arrival and his rediscovered drive as a songwriter after years of supporting others’ careers.
As the first song written and the last recorded for the album, ‘Soul Getter’ now leads its release, embodying a full-circle moment. “A new day is always possible,” he says. “I want people to know that.” The single drops April 25, 2025, setting the stage for his Irish tour.
